“XL” on a pack of socks doesn't mean the same thing from one brand to the next. Each brand publishes its own chart, and the shoe sizes behind the letters can differ by a size or more. For men with big feet, that difference decides whether a sock fits or stretches.
To show how much the labels vary, we looked up the published size charts of 11 well-known sock brands and put their men's XL and XXL ranges side by side. Every range below comes from the brand's own website, and we link to each source.
How we checked
- We used each brand's official size chart, or the size guide on its own product page when there was no separate chart page.
- All ranges are US men's shoe sizes, copied as published (including half sizes). We checked every source on 25 September 2026.
- Some brands use different charts for different product lines. Where that's the case, we say which chart or product we used.
- Brands can change their charts at any time. Always check the chart for the exact product you're buying.

What the labels actually mean
XL can start anywhere from size 12 to size 14
Among the charts above, XL starts at 12 (Balega, Nike, Smartwool, Tall Order, Wigwam), 12.5 (Darn Tough, Feetures), 13 (Under Armour) or 14 (Stance). So a man who wears a 13 could be an XL at most of these brands, but still a Large at Stance.
XL can end anywhere from size 14 to size 16
The top of the XL range is 14 at Balega, 14.5 at Darn Tough and Smartwool, 15 at Nike, Tall Order and Wigwam, 15.5 at Feetures, and 16 at Under Armour and Stance.
Size 15 is where brands disagree most
At Darn Tough, Smartwool and Oddball, 15 is XXL. At Tall Order, 15 is XL. Nike and Wigwam list 15 in both their XL and their next size up. If you wear a 15, the label on the pack tells you very little on its own.
“XXL” and “2L” are the same idea, but the ranges differ
The next size up after XL starts at 15 (Darn Tough, Smartwool, Nike, Oddball, Wigwam), 16 (Tall Order) or 17 (Stance). Where it ends matters too. Of the XXL-type ranges above, Nike, Oddball, Tall Order and Stance include size 18. Darn Tough and Wigwam stop at 17, and Smartwool at 17.5.
Some packs skip letters altogether
Hanes's Double Tough crew socks, for example, are sold by shoe size (“Shoe Sizes 12–14”) rather than a letter. That's the clearest kind of label: you can see straight away whether your size is included.
How to use your foot length instead
Most of the charts above are based on shoe size. But shoe sizes vary between footwear brands, so your actual foot length is a steadier number to work from.
- Measure both feet. Stand with your heel against a wall, mark your longest toe, and measure from the wall to the mark. Use the larger foot. Our guide to measuring your foot for XL and XXL socks shows each step.
- Convert it with a foot-length chart. Our sock size chart for men's sizes 13–18 lists the approximate foot length for each shoe size, in inches and centimetres.
- Look for a range that includes your size comfortably. If your size sits right at the top of a brand's range, the sock is likely to have less room to spare. If it's at the very edge, compare the next size up.
- Check the fit points when the socks arrive. The heel pocket should sit around your heel and the toe seam shouldn't pull. Our sock fit checklist explains what to look for.
Where Samson sizes fit in
Samson makes men's socks in two sizes, defined by shoe size and foot length:
| Samson size | US men's shoe size | Approx. foot length |
|---|---|---|
| Samson XL | 13, 14 and 15 | 11.7–12.4 in (29.7–31.4 cm) |
| Samson XXL | 16, 17 and 18 | 12.5–13.2 in (31.8–33.5 cm) |
Athletic, dress and hiking styles all come in both sizes, in packs of five pairs. If you wear 13–15, see the best socks for men's sizes 13–15. If you wear 16–18, see the best socks for sizes 16–18, or go straight to XXL socks for sizes 16–18. Not sure? Find your fit in four steps.
The bottom line
An XL or XXL label is only useful once you know the shoe-size range behind it. Check the brand's own chart for the exact product, measure your foot, and choose the range that clearly includes your size.
